cool! im going to post soon too an astromech droid. Some tips:
*connect sensors on the head.
*place the Ultrasonic sensor lower than the head, so that it can see low things.
*place the legs higher, on the highest end of the nxt, under the head.
*maybe you have use this tip, but use one 2x360 wheel (also called castor wheel) on the 3th leg. So it can turn good.

OOOOOH so the servo motors are vertical to operate the treads right? Dosen't that reverse the controlls?
Looks good for a start, but it definitely could use a lot more work. ;)

Here is my second r2d2 droid!
It is driven by two nxt motors, and head turn by one nxt motor which is geared down.
